So let’s dive in and get inspired with some easy fall tablescape styling tips!

Choosing a Theme for Your Fall Table

Honestly, I absolutely love setting a beautiful table—it is one of my favorite things to do! There is something so special about bringing together different elements that welcome your guests right as they sit down.

When I start planning my autumn tablescape, the first thing I think about is the mood I want to create. Do I want to style a more relaxed and casual table? Or maybe a more formal tablescape is better suited for the celebration?

What colors do I want to use, what seasonal table decor do I have,  and what dishes am I going to be working with?

For this fall, I wanted to strike a balance with a semi-casual atmosphere, using neutral fall colors, natural elements, and hints of green to bring warmth and harmony to the table.

I decided on a magnolia theme, inspired by a set of beautiful magnolia dishes.

Choosing a theme really helps streamline the whole process and makes it more fun. It’s like telling a story through your table—each piece adds a chapter.

Let me show you how I layer everything together to design a warm, inviting space for my friends and family!

How to Set a Fall Tablescape

Once you’ve selected a theme, I like to follow a simple formula for setting all my fall tablescapes—from arranging each place setting to creating a stunning centerpiece and adding those special finishing touches.

So get ready to get creative, and I’ll walk you through the easy steps for creating simple fall tablescapes of your own.

Selecting the Best Linens for Your Fall Tablescape

Choosing the right linens for your fall tablescape sets the mood for the entire table, and I love getting creative with it! You can play around with different options for tablecloths, table runners, and placemats.

You can even use a cozy plaid throw blanket to add some warmth and texture.

For my fall tablescape, I chose a burlap table runner and matching placemats. I love the casual look of burlap, and it brings a great texture that complements the rustic, feel of my table.

Making your own burlap runner is super easy! But, if DIY isn’t your thing, there are many affordable options online, too.

Building the Perfect Place Setting: Tablescape Layering Tips for Fall

To style my dining room table for fall, I used several layers for the individual place settings, beginning with placements.

I chose another neutral burlap texture with a round shape and pretty raffia-patterned edging.

However, if you wanted something with a more obvious fall feel, you could also make some simple DIY pumpkin placemats.

For the next layer, I added a wooden charger plate right on top of the placemat. I love how it highlights the pretty edges and brings a warm, earthy touch to the setting.

The dark wood really balances nicely with the lighter burlap of the runner and placemats—it’s all about mixing textures and colors to create that perfect fall setting.

Next comes the dinner plate. This white plate has a textured gold border that pops against the wood charger plate and creates an ideal base for layering more dishes.

On top of the dinner plate, I like to add a salad plate. For my fall tablescape, I chose these beautiful magnolia salad plates that really complement the other decorations on my table. (More on that later!)

Finally, top finish setting the dishware, I placed a small bowl that matches the dinner plate to bring everything together.

Mixing and matching different sizes, textures, and colors not only serves a practical purpose but also makes the table visually appealing. Each piece is lovely on its own, but when you layer them together, the result is absolutely stunning!

Completing the Look: Silverware, Napkins, and Glassware Essentials

We are not done yet! Next, come the napkins.

First, I chose a beautiful deep green cloth napkin that matches the shade of the magnolia leaves on the dishware. Then I folded it neatly and tucked it inside the bowl, adding a burlap leaf on top for the perfect finishing touch.

Don’t you think the neutral, gold, and green color scheme is just perfect for this fall table?

There are also many different ways you may choose to style your napkins aside from the method I have shown. For instance, you could tie them up with cute acorns or other fall-related decorations.

Inox Artisans copper-handled flatware

The right flatware is also an important element for your table setting. This copper-handled flatware is so beautiful and adds the perfect rustic touch to my fall tablescape.

This silverware is made by a company called Inox Artisans. They are one of my favorites and you can see why. The quality is outstanding and they feel so luxurious in your hands.

To complete your fall table, don’t forget the glassware. I chose a taller glass for wine and a vintage amber-colored goblet, perfect for iced tea or water.

I love mixing different glasses in varying heights, colors, and textures—it creates a beautiful, balanced look that adds depth and interest to the table.

How to Set a Beautiful Table with a Fall Table Runner

Now that you have all the perfect pieces in place, feel free to experiment with the arrangement and swap out items depending on the occasion. This flexibility lets you create a fresh look each time, making your fall tablescape truly unique.

Creating a Rustic Fall Centerpiece

Besides the fall table runner and place settings we have put together, there are a few more touches you can add to make your fall table even more festive.

Consider adding a beautiful centerpiece on your dining room. I made this one shown above using a Dollar Tree pumpkin wreath. The magnolia dishes in the place settings pair perfectly with the faux magnolia flowers and leaves in this easy and elegant fall centerpiece.

Then, to set the mood, just add a few candles, like these lovely golden ones, for a warm and inviting ambiance.

Other fall table decoration ideas you can do involve creating a flower arrangement with seasonal fall blooms.

For fall outdoor tablescapes, you could sprinkle DIY patina pumpkins down the center of the table for a charming touch.

Or a beautiful DIY cornucopia would make the perfect centerpiece for any fall harvest table setting.

How to Make a Faux Fall Cake

Looking for another decorative element idea? This beautiful wooden cake stand and rustic cake is the perfect addition to your fall table.

To create my faux DIY cake for a fall tablescape, I started with an 8-inch round Styrofoam cake dummy.

I wanted to make a “naked” cake where you can see some of the cake peeking through the frosting. So, I simply spray-painted the Styrofoam brown.

For the frosting effect, I used DAP Plaster of Paris. I applied it with a cake frosting knife. Then, afterward, I smoothed it out with a stainless steel scraper and let it dry overnight.

To finish off the faux cake, I added a simple fall floral pick with a pumpkin for a touch of seasonal charm.

Lastly, when throwing a dinner party, I like to add a personal touch to each place setting. An easy way to do this is with place cards or name tags.

It not only makes your guests feel special but also adds an extra layer of charm to your table. Plus, it is a fun way to get creative and tie the whole theme together!
