Thrifted Watering Cans: The Star of the Show

Last year, I decorated my she shed for spring with baskets,As much as I loved it they didn’t hold up well against the elements. So this fall, I wanted to use something more durable for the outdoors.

I decided to repurpose a collection of my favorite thrifted watering cans to add both character and charm. Each one has its own story, and together they create a vintage vibe that feels both fitting and decorative.

DIY: How to Hang Watering Cans on Your She Shed

Once you’ve gathered all your supplies, it’s time to hang your watering cans and start decorating for the season. The best part? You can leave the cans up year-round and simply swap out the arrangements to match each season—fresh blooms in spring, greenery in summer, dried foliage in fall, and even festive touches for the holidays.

Step 1: Hanging the Chicken Wire

I purchased chicken wire that was already 12 inches wide, so there was no need to cut it down to size—this makes the project much easier.

  1. Measure and Cut
    • Cut a length of chicken wire long enough to run down the side of your shed where you’d like to hang your watering cans.
  2. Position the Wire
    • Hold the chicken wire in place against the shed wall, keeping it straight and flush.
  3. Secure with Staples
    • Using a staple gun, attach the wire firmly to the shed, starting at the top and working your way down. Add extra staples along the edges to make sure it’s secure and can hold the weight of your watering cans.

Step 2: Attach the Watering Cans

I used two methods to secure my watering cans. First, I placed an adhesive hook on the back of each can. Then, I hung the hook onto the chicken wire. For extra stability, I finished by fastening a zip tie around the handle of the can and the chicken wire to keep everything securely in place.

Step 3: Decorating with Fall Foliage

Start with a Base

  • Tuck Spanish moss into the chicken wire to cover and soften the structure.

Add Height and Texture

  • Insert sprigs of fresh curly willow and dried eucalyptus for natural movement and shape.

Layer Seasonal Color

Finish with Details

  • Tuck in clusters of faux berries and a few pinecones to complete the arrangement with rustic charm.
Tip from wendy’s craft room:

Forage for sturdy fall branches or reuse old silk stems—both can handle outdoor weather, and you won’t mind if they get a little worn over time.

Cozy Autumn Touches on a Budget

The beauty of fall she shed decorating ideas is that they don’t have to cost a fortune. By using thrifted finds and what you already have in the garden or shed, you can style a unique seasonal look that feels warm and inviting. A fall dried flower arrangement from foraged flowers that cost nothing, a small lantern by the door, or a rustic foraged wreath on the shed wall can tie the whole look together.

Cozy Textiles

Drape a plaid throw or a chunky knit blanket over your favorite chair to instantly warm up the space. Then layer in a few soft pillows in rich fall shades—think rust, mustard, or deep green—for that extra touch of seasonal comfort.
