Brighten Up Your Table with a Lemon Centerpiece
Living in Southern California, we’re fortunate to have access to an abundance of fresh citrus fruit all year round. One of my favorites is lemons, with their vibrant color and refreshing scent that instantly brighten any space.
I also love flower arranging, so today, I’m excited to share an easy project that will add a cheery pop of color to your home — a DIY lemon centerpiece
Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering or simply want to brighten up your dining room table, this lemon centerpiece is the perfect addition.
So grab some fresh lemons and let’s create a stunning citrus theme arrangement together.
Materials You’ll Need to Make a Lemon Centerpiece
*Note: Artificial lemons are not recommended for this centerpiece . Fresh are best!
How to Make a Lemon Centerpiece
Step 1: Choose Your Vase
Start by choosing a vase or urn for your centerpiece. For this arrangement a vase that is approximately 8″ in diameter works best.
For my lemon centerpiece, I chose an old thrifted silver urn. I love how its shape and patina enhance the bright color of the lemons.
When find a vase for your centerpiece, don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Over the years, some of my favorite centerpieces have been created by repurposing unique items into flower vases.
Tip from wendy’s craft room:
One of my favorite places to look for unique flower vase ideas is yard sales and Estate sales.
You can find some of the most unusual items at these sales, and as they say, one man’s (or woman’s) junk is another man’s treasure! Using upcycled decor is a great way to create some truly one-of-a-kind floral arrangements with fresh flowers.
Step 2: Arrange the Lemons
To start making your lemon centerpiece, follow these steps:
- Cut a skewer to 8 inches.
- Insert the pointed end into the bottom of a lemon.
- Place this lemon across the top of your vase.
- Insert the other end of the skewer into another lemon.
This is how the skewered lemons should look laying across your vase.
Repeat this process two more times, using a total of 6 lemons. Crisscross the skewers and lemons to form a complete circle around the vase, creating the bottom layer of your centerpiece.
When the first layer is done, this is what your lemon centerpiece should look like. Easy-peasy, right?
To create the second layer of your centerpiece, repeat the process from above using 6 more lemons.
This time, cut the skewers slightly shorter ( 7″) and alternate them between the lemons in the first layer, just like in the photo above.
For the third and final layer of your centerpiece, repeat the previous steps, this time using four lemons.
For this next step, make the skewers much shorter( 4-5″) to help create the shape of a tree. This will allow the layers of lemons to taper gradually, forming a cone shape as you build upwards.
Securely placing the shorter skewers in the lemons will give your centerpiece that classic tree-like appearance.
Tip from wendy’s craft room:
Here’s a helpful tip for cutting wood skewers. Bundle the skewers together and secure them with a rubber band or tape. This will ensure they stay aligned, making it easier to cut them all at once to the same size.
To prevent splintering, use a sharp pair of pruning shears or heavy-duty scissors, and make a quick, clean cut through the entire bundle.
Step 3: Add Some Fresh Greenery
To add the finishing touch to your lemon centerpiece, fill in any empty spaces with fresh greens.
Arrange the greenery all around the vase to add a beautiful contrast and enhance the natural look of the centerpiece.
I used pittosporum cut from my hedge, but if you don’t have greenery in your backyard, you can grab a small bundle from your local grocery store or your local florist.
Tip from wendy’s craft room:
Here’s a great idea! Clean your greenery and spray it with leaf shine to make it look fresh and shiny.
Additional Centerpiece Ideas and Variations
Want to get even more creative with your lemon centerpiece? Here are a few variations to consider:
- Citrus Mix: Use lemon slices or limes or oranges for a different color scheme that’s just as vibrant.
- Candle Addition: Add candles to the arrangement for a warm, cozy effect, perfect for evening gatherings.
- Herbal Touch: Incorporate fragrant herbs like rosemary or lavender for an added sensory experience.
