Feathered & Festive: Elegant DIY Feather Ornaments
Several times a week, I take a walk through our local Arboretum — it’s one of my favorite places to unwind. The paths are lined with fascinating plants, and I’m always greeted by a flurry of peacocks and geese wandering about. It was here that I found the inspiration for the third ornament in my 12 Days of DIY Christmas Ornaments series.
Day 1: DIY Air-Dry Clay Gingerbread Ornaments
Day 2: DIY Velvet Ornaments

And being the forager that I am, I can never resist the treasures they leave behind. Over the years, I’ve collected handfuls of their beautiful feathers — soft blues, creamy whites, and delicate neutrals that feel like nature’s art.
I’ve been saving them for just the right project, and today I’m so excited to finally share how I turned them into the sweetest handmade ornaments. These feathered creations add a soft, elegant touch to any Christmas tree — and they’re a beautiful way to bring a little bit of nature indoors for the holidays.

What Makes This Feather Ornament Craft So Special

Tip from wendy’s craft room:
You can find beautiful feathers and ornaments at your local craft store or online. If you love decorating with pheasant feathers, they add the most gorgeous natural pattern and warm tone to this project.
How to Make DIY Feather Ornaments
I made a few variations of these feather ornaments, and below you’ll find step-by-step directions for each style.
Round Feather Ornament
Step 1: Gather and Prepare Your Feathers
If you’re using natural or pheasant feathers, make sure they’re clean and fully dry. Trim them to fit the size of your ornament. My ornament is a 3.5″ ball, and I cut the feathers so they were no longer than 1.5″ long.

Step 2: Prepare the Ornament
Remove the metal top from your clear ornament. This project works beautifully with both glass and plastic ornaments.

Step 3: Add the Feathers
Starting at the bottom of the ornament, begin layering your feathers in a circular motion. Use hot glue to attach each feather one by one, slightly overlapping them as you go to create a soft, full look.
Once the first layer is complete, add a second layer above it, continuing around the ornament until you reach the top.
If you’re using peacock feathers, try adding a few smaller feathers with the eye pattern near the top for an extra touch of color and texture.

Step 4: Replace the Cap
Once you’re happy with the arrangement, replace the cap securely. If you’d like, you can spray-paint it gold for a more polished finish.
Step 5: Add Ribbon or Twine
Cut your ribbon or twine to about 8–10 inches in length and loop it through the top. Secure it with a knot or bow. Velvet ribbon adds a luxurious texture that pairs beautifully with the soft feathers.

- * Remove the metal top from a clear ornament.
- * Starting at the bottom, hot glue feathers in a circular pattern.
- * Overlap each layer slightly as you work toward the top.
- * Add smaller peacock feathers with eye patterns near the top if desired.

Pear Ornament
- * Use a small pear-shaped gourd as your base.
- * Spray paint the gourd black if using dark feathers.
- * Layer feathers around the gourd as you did with the round ornament.
- * Leave the downy feathers near the neck untrimmed for a natural look.
- * Add a small velvet bow or ribbon to hang the ornament.
Pear-Shaped Feather Ornaments
This method is similar to the round version, but I used a pear-shaped gourd as my base instead of a plastic ornament.
Step 1: Spray Paint the Gourd
If you’re using dark feathers, give the gourd a quick coat of black spray paint to create a consistent base color.

Step 2: Add the Feathers
Using the same layering method as before, glue the feathers around the gourd. Near the top, leave the downy feathers untrimmed to create a soft, natural transition at the neck.

Step 3: Add Ribbon
Finish with a small velvet bow to hang your pear ornament on the tree.

Styling Ideas
Hang your feather ornaments on a full-sized Christmas tree or a petite feather tree.
Arrange several together in a wooden bowl for a natural home décor accent.
Hang a few in a window to catch the light.
Combine them with other handmade decorations like DIY feather balls, feather flowers, or pheasant feather decorations.

Wrapping Up
These feather ornaments have quickly become some of my favorites — soft, natural, and full of meaning. I hope they inspire you to look at the little treasures around you in a new way and create something beautiful for your own home this Christmas.
