Why You’ll Love These DIY Valentine Day Hearts
There’s just something about gold foil that makes everything feel a little more special. The way it catches the light and adds a touch of shimmer is simply beautiful. If you love crafting with gold leaf as much as I do, you are going to love this project.
I have used gold foil for all kinds of DIYs from gold foiled pumpkins in the fall to elegant pears for Christmas and even gold leaf Christmas ornaments.
So, for Valentine’s Day I thought why not try making some beautiful homemade Valentine hearts. They turned out even prettier than I imagined and I can’t wait to show you how to make your own.
Tools and Supplies Needed to Make Foiled Hearts for Valentine’s Day

How to Make Valentine Hearts with Gold Foil Leaf
Step 1: Add the Gold Leaf Adhesive to Your Hearts
To make DIY Valentine hearts with pink gold leaf foil, first you need to prep your heart ornament.
Paint on the gold leafing adhesive with a brush. Be careful to only put the glue where you want the gold leafing to adhere to the ornament.

It’s important to let the adhesive site for around 20-30 minutes until it is tacky to the touch.
Tip from wendy’s craft room:
When using gold leaf adhesive, the most important tip is to apply a very thin, even layer of adhesive and let it become tacky before applying the gold leaf foil. This will help the gold leaf foil stick to your hearts.
Step 2: Place a Sheet of Pink Gold Leaf on Your Hearts
Next, carefully take the sheet of foil and lay it over the tacky part of the heart.

Continue by repeating this step until the entire heart is covered with the pink foil.

This is what your hearts will look like once they are fully covered.
Step 3: Remove Loose Gold Leaf from Your Hearts
To finish your DIY Valentine hearts, take a dry, clean paintbrush and brush off any excess foil, and you will see that the brush will smooth and burnish the foil

The results are stunning!
One of the best things about gold leaf foil is that it comes in different colors, so you can have fun mixing and matching. You can go with classic gold, try rose gold for a softer look, or even use red for a bold Valentine’s touch. You could even blend a few colors together to make your hearts really stand out. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, so just play around and see what you like best.
Other Ways to Make Valentine’s Day Hearts
I also used some flat wood to make these pretty Valentine hearts and just foiled parts of them, and I absolutely love how they turned out. The mix of shimmer and natural wood gives them such a unique look.

Just a little heads-up, the wood absorbs the glue pretty quickly, so it takes a bit more patience, but the results are totally worth it.
Ideas for Decorating with Your Gold Leaf Foil Valentines Hearts
There are so many fun ways to use these Valentine hearts when decorating and displaying them once they’re finished.
Tie on some colorful ribbon and hang them on a Valentine’s Day tree for a festive touch, or scatter them down the center of your dining room table for a romantic dinner setup.
They also look beautiful piled in a decorative bowl on a coffee table or tucked into a glass vase for a layered look. You could attach them to a free printable paper heart Valentine’s Day banner or DIY Valentine heart garland for your mantel, add them to a Valentine’s fabric rag wreath, or use them as gift toppers for a little extra sparkle.
