Our front porch spans the entire width of our home in Southern California. Enjoyable year-round, it’s where I like to go above and beyond for Christmas – inviting guests in with a warm Christmas spirit upon their arrival at holiday parties! This open space serves as additional room for entertaining on cheerful occasions throughout the season. Guests love lingering outside during gatherings here – This is why I like to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Preparing to Decorate the Porch with my Outdoor Decorations

I happen to like to change my decor every year. This can be a good and a bad thing. Typically I can use what I have because I have gathered quite a bit over the years. So much that sometimes I can’t even remember what I have. So every year, I find myself having to re-organize. My husband and I go back and forth about the best way to organize. I like to categorize by item and color. He prefers to do it by room. However, when you are changing it up each year, this can’t be done. I think I have finally convinced him.

So once again, I will reorganize by category this year! and hopefully, I can find just what I need next year.

I enjoy sprucing up my home decor every year, and this year isn’t any different. My husband and I often debate the best way to keep it all organized – his preference is by room, while mine leans towards categorizing items by color or type. Luckily for me, we’ve agreed! This season will feature a reorganization arranged according to the category so that when next year rolls around, everything can easily be found without wasting precious hours searching through boxes of forgotten treasures. I also think it is time to purge a few items.

The Porch is typically the last part of my home that I decorate, so I tend to see what is left and work with what I have.

My 2022 Front Porch Christmas Decorations

I had used a lot of the giant jingle bells in the house last year and decided they would be great on the porch this year.

Step by Step process to display Outdoor Christmas Porch Decorations

  • First, Choose the colors and a theme for your porch. Since the trim on our home is black and white, I chose to use Black, White, Red, and Green this year.
  • Next, I look at what I have left to decorate and what will work with my outdoor Christmas porch decorations. Fortunately, my porch is covered, so I do not have to worry about the elements too much. If we have inclement weather, I will move the items on the steps up on the porch to avoid any damage.
  • Now it’s time to bring the cozy vibes of a living room straight onto your porch! By strategically placing area rugs, you can create three distinct areas: one at the entrance for guests to enter, inviting warmth; another under the swing for laid-back lounging with friends and family; and lastly, an anchor rug in front of a bench providing extra comfort. It’ll make any outdoor space feel like home.
  • Add a smaller doormat over the area rug for the entrance.

Move Any Necessary Furniture to make room for your Outdoor Porch Christmas Decorations.

  • My porch is very long and narrow, so I typically leave my outdoor furniture where it is. I like to add some vintage pieces to my decor, which changes for every season.
  • For Christmas, I added a trunk to use as a coffee table. This allows my guests a place to put their drinks or plates of food.
  • Cushions, pillows, and blankets add a welcoming touch.

Adding Live Plants to my Porch

  • Fresh greenery and plants are always a nice touch to a front porch. I picked up several poinsettias at Home Depot for Black Friday, so they were a real bargain. Then added a few large fresh green Cypress trees and several pots of paperwhites that I had planted some time ago. You can read my post here about how to force paperwhites in the winter. I planted them in the terra cotta pots I had aged earlier in the year.
  • I love adding touches of vintage to my porch each season. This year I added poinsettias to some old vintage olive buckets. An old house would not be the same without a few vintage touches on the front porch.

Adding Faux Christmas Trees and Greens

I always find that mixing the real greens with the faux greens makes for a great combination. Unfortunately, in Southern California, we have been known to have some warm days in December, so the real greens do not hold up very well. Here is a list of what I added to my outdoor Christmas porch decorations.

  • Two large birch branch trees
  • Two small birch branch trees
  • A few flocked faux Christmas trees
  • Several sprigs of faux greenery throughout the porch. I even tied some onto the chains of the porch swing.
  • I hung wreaths on the sides of the porches. I love this new addition. They look like they are floating in the air.

Final Details for Decorating my Front Porch

The details are always my favorite part. It is kind of like the icing on the cake.

I added a dough bowl to my trunk in front of the bench with candles, bells, and a french horn.

Don’t forget the Lights!

Of course, we can’t have a Christmas porch without lots of twinkle lights. I love to sit out here at night with a warm blanket and a cup of cocoa. Do you see who I see in this picture?
