The best Pumpkin DIY Placemats
Prepare for autumn with these easy-to-follow instructions on how to make DIY pumpkin placemats.
With fall just around the corner, it is time you prepare by making an incredible table decoration that will wow everyone at your dinner.
Follow along today and learn all about what materials are needed step by step for this project.
I was preparing for a baby shower when I came up with this idea. A fall theme for my new little pumpkin was what I was after, and these placemats were the perfect touch for my table.
I wanted to use natural material to fit in with my theme, so I chose burlap to make these pumpkin DIY placemats.
How to cut Burlap Straight for your DIY Pumpkin Placemats
Snip a small cut about 1/2″ long where you want to cut the burlap. Find a strand of the burlap and pull it all the way through.
This method will leave a line in the burlap.
Second, cut along that line, and you will have a perfectly straight cut of burlap.
I used this method to cut my strips of material before I stiffened the burlap.
How to Stiffen the Burlap for your Pumpkin DIY Placemats
Firstly, I found a pumpkin shape I liked on the internet and blew it up to my desired size.
This pumpkin measures 14.5″ wide x 13.5″ tall.
Next, you need to stiffen the strips of burlap.
Next, I made a mixture of half white glue and half water. You can buy a large bottle of white glue here.
Mix the glue and water mixture in a disposable container large enough for the fabric to fit in for your DIY Placemat stiffening.
I used a disposable turkey pan.
Make sure your mixture of glue and water are well mixed.
Be prepared to hang the fabric to dry. I used a clothesline outside and laid down paper underneath to collect the drippings.
Be prepared, as this is a messy job.
Next, dip one piece of the burlap in the water/glue solution and make sure it is coated well on both sides.
Lastly, hang the fabric on a clothesline.
In addition, put a pan underneath your fabric and use your hands to remove some of the excess glue and water solution.
Let the DIY placemats dry overnight.
Now that your burlap has dried, you will cut each piece into four sections. They should measure approx. 18″ x15″
Using a pencil, place the pumpkin pattern under each piece of burlap and trace with a pencil.
Cut each pumpkin out of the stiffened burlap with good scissors and discard the scraps.
The burlap does not dry flat, so it is necessary to iron the placemats before you paint them.
Place a towel underneath and on top of the pumpkin to avoid getting any glue on the iron.
This works well, and the placemats will be flat.
Lastly, we will paint our pumpkin placemats with some acrylic paint.
Firstly, I placed each pumpkin over my pattern and painted the lines and around the edges of the pumpkin first to define its shape.
Next, I did some shading with two colors of paint and a lot of water to create an ombre watercolor look. But, again, you can use the colors of your choice.
I was looking for a neutral palette for my pumpkins, so I chose nude colors.
Do the painting in steps if you have time.
Once you have finished your placemats, you are ready to set your table.
Since I was hosting a baby shower for a little girl, I wanted to use pretty pinks and nude colors on my table.
I incorporated dried hydrangeas, some natural straw pumpkins, and several shades of pink and nude pumpkins to complete the look.
