Today is our Pinterest Challenge Day. If you are unfamiliar with this challenge, our host Cindy @countyroad407 gives us a picture, and we will re-create it with our twist.

This month our photo inspiration was this fabulous garden-inspired cabinet decor by Michelle @thepaintedhinge. I loved reading Michelle’s post. I can relate to her story of finishing the blog post the night before it’s due. As hard as we bloggers try to be ahead of the game, life sometimes gets in the way.

My Garden-Inspired Cabinet Decor

This image inspired me as it is just my style. I was thrilled I had all the components needed to recreate a similar look. The one thing that stood out to me was how Michelle used plants to decorate the interior of her home.

I selected various plants for my vintage garden display, medium to tall topiaries, assorted herbs, and ivy. I also integrated my terracotta pot collection and a vintage card file cabinet I keep in my craft room.

A cabinet decorate with a vintage garden theme on top. A card file cabinet with drawers that are open and decorated with terracotta flower pots and live plants. a Basket with assorted terracotta pots and two topiary trees.

I’ve used old books to create height for some of my plants. Lastly, I added a vintage butterfly typewriter, an old scale, several vintage floral frogs, and an assortment of my vintage seed packets as a banner hanging above for an added touch.

There are so many great house plants that you can use in your home to decorate with. Large plants, small plants, tall plants, natural plants, and even faux plants.

The Benefits of Having Indoor Plants

Did you know decorating your home with plants can do more than add some greenery?

Living plants aid in purifying the air to combat air pollution and are a great way to improve mental health and reduce stress.

Additionally, adding plants to your décor can reduce noise and enhance the aesthetics of your home.

Give your home a breath of fresh air (literally) with some houseplants.

What are the Best Indoor Plants

I am all about low-maintenance plants when it comes to indoors. So I always consider the type of plants when decorating my home.

Here is a list of my favorite potted plants that require little care to bring into your home.

Devil’s Ivy (Pothos)

  • Ensure they’re kept in a warm spot, ideally at room temperature.
  • Please place them in an area with bright, indirect light.
  • Water them only when the soil feels dry. Once a month, use a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer.
  • For a bushier plant, cut back vines just above a leaf.
  • Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp rag, and apply leaf shine.

Snake Plant

  • This plant is hard to kill and will survive in low light.
  • Only water when the soil is dry. Once a week is adequate.
  • Trim away any dead leaves.
  • You can put this plant outside in the summer, but it will freeze at any temperature below 50 degrees.
  • This plant is perfect for a home office or to fill an empty corner of your home.

Hydrangeas

  • Be sure you have the correct type of plant. Hydrangea Macrophylla is best suited for indoors.
  • Make sure you have it planted in a pot with good drainage.
  • These are typically seasonal, but I love having them in the house when available (I purchase mine at Trader Joe’s).
  • They want bright indirect light.
  • Water when they start to feel dry.

Peace Lilies

  • Properly hydrating your Peace Lily is crucial for optimal care.
  • Use a spray bottle to mist leaves throughout the week.
  • Make sure to trim away any unhealthy leaves.
  • Apply fertilizers sparingly.

Indoor Garden Herbs

  • Basil
  • Mint
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Sage
  • Thyme
  • Lavender
  • Most herbs require a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight for optimal growth.
  • Window sills are an ideal location for herbs.
  • Herbs have different water requirements. I typically water them every few days but check them daily to see if they are dry.
  • Fertilize once weekly during summer using a general-purpose, water-soluble fertilizer. Dilute to 1/4 the rate listed on the packaging for optimal results.

19 Tips for Indoor Plant Decoration

Whether you are decorating the kitchen, a home office, or your living room, it is important to keep the size of the plants in mind. Choosing the right plants for your interior spaces will create a cohesive look.

  1. Add a tall tree or a statement plant in a small corner to create a Focal point.

Mix Faux and real plants.

2. One of my favorite tips is to mix faux plants with small indoor fresh green plants. The faux plants are so well made these days that you can barely tell they are not real. This is a great tip if you do not have a green thumb.

3. Use different shapes and sizes of plants. Mix larger plants with smaller plants. Incorporate plants with different shapes and growth patterns while designing your plant arrangement. Pothos, a low-growing trailing plant, a Dracaena with a fountain-like appearance, and a Fiddle-Leaf fFg tree with tall, upward-reaching leaves are excellent choices.

Designer Tips

4. Interior designers would say to arrange your plants or vignettes using an odd number of items. If you are using all plants, use 3, or maybe you are using a few books, a plant, and a candle. By using odd numbers, you create visual interest.

5. Add plants to your shelving units. The greenery helps to break up the small spaces and softens the look.

6. Use a variety of containers. Mix a basket with terracotta pots or a white ceramic pot.

7. For a cohesive look, use pots all the same color. You can use different sizes and textures, but keep the pots consistent in color.

8. Schedule your plant care day. My day is Friday, so I know I will water and clean my plants every Friday and then water on any additional days needed.

10. Plants on the coffee table are always a good idea. I change out the plants I use in this space quite often. At the moment, I have a white hydrangea. Sometimes I bring in one of my big ferns and love the bright green color it brings into the house.

11. Mix different colors of green in your plant display. There are so many different shades of green. Also, add in a few plants with variegated leaves.

12. Add a basket of assorted plants, real and faux, to the kitchen for a fresh look.

14. Hang plants from the ceiling for a dramatic look. Use a hanging basket or a macrame hanging planter to display your plants.

15. If you have Pothos with long vines, have fun with them. Drape them over a curtain rod, or put them around a picture frame on the wall.

16. Use a designated piece of furniture to create a plant display using all plants. Bookshelves and open display cabinets are great for this type of plant display.

17. Use a plant stand to display a plant in a tight corner of a small room.

Using plants in large rooms

18. If you have a large room, adding plants and indoor trees is the perfect way to bring design style to any room. Be sure to think about the perfect plant for your space. Not only do you need to think about how the plant will look, but you must consider the plant’s needs. How much light does the plant need, direct or indirect? Do you have easy access to water?

There are many things to consider when choosing your plants for a specific room.

19. To separate the space, Use tall plants to create a screen in a studio apartment or a large room.

Decorating your home with indoor plants doesn’t have to be intimidating or overwhelming. With just a few simple tips, like selecting the right plants for your environment, using different planters to highlight your plants, and adding texture through various features like hanging baskets and macrame, you can add a fresh design element to your home.
