What is it like to be featured in a magazine? many of you have asked me , so I am here to tell you all about it.
I have received many questions regarding the process of being published in a magazine, so I thought I would share with you.
How did the magazine find you?
This is the second feature I have had in a magazine, and it truly is an honor.
The first magazine was Better Homes and Gardens “Country Gardens” and they found me at a vintage antique show called Junk in the Trunk. I had a booth and was doing some special succulent plantings in old vintage tools. They featured my DIY tutorial on how to create these tools at home.
This time, I was found through Instagram, yes that is right, social media is the place to be if you want to be featured in a magazine. I am sure they must have full-time employees who do nothing but look for content on social media.
“in her studio” is all about women in their creative spaces, so I was featured for my outdoor atelier which is my she shed where I create my magic.
Does the magazine pay you to be featured?
Every magazine is different. When I was featured in BHG magazine I was not paid. Better, Homes and Gardens brought their photographer, stylist, and set up the photoshoot themselves.
“in her studio” allowed me to choose the photographer and set up the shoot myself, and they did pay me for the feature. This particular magazine pays by the page.
I find some will pay and others will not, but it is always an honor to be featured and helps when you are trying to reach out to brands to represent them, this gives you credibility.
How did I prepare for the photoshoot?
This is always the part that takes the most work. I started by cleaning my space and doing a bit of re-organizing inside of the shed. I needed to make sure the outside and the inside were in tip-top shape.
Secondly, I took a trip to Home Depot and replanted some of my pots outside.
Since a lot of my work involves fresh flowers, I took a trip to my local flower market and put together some arrangements to showcase.
Lastly, I had to decide what I was going to wear, I wanted to keep this simple as the showcase of the article was about my space.
This was a little tough as I had a broken ankle, and it was hard to get around.
Fortunately, I was in a boot and was able to remove it for the shoot.
From the pictures, you would never know.
Do you get to approve the layout and article before it is published?
When I worked with Better Homes and Gardens, they wrote the article and did the layout, I was able to view the article and give my input before it was published.
This time, I was asked to write the article myself, this was challenging as I am not very comfortable writing. My sweet husband was such a help, and the two of us were able to get the article done. The magazine did all of the layouts and approximately three weeks later, they sent me a PDF via e-mail and I was able to suggest any changes I felt were needed.
Would you do it again?
You bet I would, in a heartbeat. I know it is a lot of work to prepare for, however, it is such an honor and a privilege to be featured in any magazine. It certainly gets you motivated to get your house cleaned and organized for the big day!
